Cal McCorkle has lived in Bluewater Bay his whole life. He works two jobs to support a brother with a laundry list of psychiatric diagnoses and a great-uncle with Alzheimer's, and his personal life amounts to impersonal hookups with his boss. He's got no time, no ambition, and no hope. All he has is family, and they're killing him one responsibility at a time.

Avery Kennedy left Los Angeles, his family, and his sleazy boyfriend to attend a Wolf's Landing convention, and he has no plans to return. But when he finds himself broke and car-less in Bluewater Bay, he's worried he'll have to slink home with his tail between his legs. Then Cal McCorkle rides to his rescue, and his urge to run away dies a quick death.

Avery may seem helpless at first, but he can charm Cal's fractious brother, so Cal can pretty much forgive him anything. Even being adorkable. And giving him hope. But Cal can only promise Avery "until we can't" - and the cost of changing that to "until forever" might be too high, however much they both want it.

I was thrilled to see that the next book in this series was by the same author (and featured the same characters) as my favorite story in the Valentine's Day anthology, "Nascha." In fact, that story takes place over the same time period as this novel, and it was fun to see what was going on in Cal's life "for real" rather than from the unreliable narration perspective of his great-uncle.

The downside to this, of course, was that the short story essentially spoils the ending of the novel. Getting there was still an amazing journey, and obviously you know that you're getting a "happily ever after" no matter what, but I'd have liked to be a bit more surprised regarding the details.

As with many of the other books in this series, the author handles diversity (this time in the context of a character with a communication handicap) with compassion and care. Like the two heroes, Cal's brother Keir was a fascinating and three-dimensional character. Therefore, it was a bit surprising that on the flip side, the author continued to beat me over the head with unnecessary and exoticized descriptions of Cal's darker (American Indian) skin tone, which became frustrating and repetitive.

Overall, however, I adored this story between Cal and Avery. Despite the whirlwind nature of their relationship, I feel like the two lovers in this book are the closest to "soul mates" of any of the couples featured in this series to date.

The Deep of the Sound Bluewater Bay Book 8 (Audible Audio Edition) Nick J Russo Amy Lane Riptide Publishing Books Reviews

Oh God...the FEELS! So...many...feels! I love Amy Lane's stories, and this one didn't disappoint. It was full of angst, romance, angst, sex, angst, a surprise or two, and oh...did I mention angst?
Normally, I don't care for a lot of angst. I like my reading to take me away from the stress of real life, but Amy? She just writes it so WELL! Cal and Avery just needed to bet together. I simply wouldn't have it any other way. Their connection is achingly beautiful.

I don't give away spoilers. I will tell you that The Deep of the Sound needs to be read. Read it now!
I have not read any of the other books in this series but am a huge Amy Lane fan so I one clicked as soon as I saw this one. Amy Lane writes characters and family life with such depth and complexity. Her characters are not airbrushed glamorous gorgeousness, they are real people with salt of the earth issues. She reminds me so much of William Faulkner-I wish the whole world could be exposed to her talent. This book was very somber in tone. Cal has spent the last six years taking care of his elderly uncle and younger brother. Avery has moved to Bluewater bay for a fresh start in life. Their romance is sweet and moving, the sex is hot and the family connections are priceless. The last 10% of the book is fantastic however I could have used a bit more drama between Avery and Cal in the 90% preceding. That said this was not one of my favorite Lane books. I really never felt connected with the characters. Cal's motives seemed more gratuitous and self absorbed than altruistic. I can't really say more or I will ruin the plot. I would still encourage anyone to read this book and I am definitely going to try another in the series (having never heard of any of the other authors.). If you have never read an amy lane book before I would suggest The Locker Room or Beneath the Stain as an example of the fabulousness of her gift for writing.

Amy Lane is one of my favorite authors and I do enjoy this series. This book while set in Bluewater Bay does not have much to do with the TV series but does include the fans.

Cal broke my heart. He has so much responsibility and has from such a young age. He has given up having a life to provide for his Uncle and his little brother. Both have serious medical problems and demand so much attention, care and money for medicine that it is killing the person that is Cal.

Avery is a geek and a reporter/writer. He is a fan of Wolf's Landing. He has just broke with his cheating boyfriend and decided to relocate to Bluewater Bay. His parents are cold and heartless. They are emotionally cruel to their son. Avery needs a new start for his life.

Cal rescues Avery from the side of the road and his broken car. Maybe they are to rescue each other.

Nascha is the subject of a short story that Amy Lane wrote and is worth reading.

When compared to other of Lane's books, this one just misses being in my favorites of hers. That is not because this was is bad, it is not, but because some, like The Locker Room, are just so good. This story is good and the characters complex. It is a good addition to Bluewater Bay.
I have been reading through this whole Bluewater Bay series and I have to say, Avery is one of the cutest creatures to grace the pages of most HEA BL novels. He's so adorkable I almost want him for my little brother. His addiction to the werewolf series, mentioned in the first of this group of novels, is so heartfelt and his awkwardness is charming. Cal is about the perfect person for this awkwardness. Yes, just like any other BL novel, there is a clash of 'epic' proportions, but Cal gets over himself and the two end up together, not a surprise. I was glad to see that Cal stood up to his own brother for Avery, which showed he was growing as a character after meeting the guy only a couple of weeks prior. Cal's family are great. I can empathize with Cal's brother since I too live with ASD and ADHD, so I know how he must feel at times (Obviously one of my focuses right now is on BL novels since I haven't stopped reading them in months). I can imagine Avery and Cal, plus Cal's family will happily spend the rest of their days together, which makes this book sweet in a non-overly-saccharine sort of way.
I was thrilled to see that the next book in this series was by the same author (and featured the same characters) as my favorite story in the Valentine's Day anthology, "Nascha."
