After describing this book to a friend I attempted to look this book up and see if perhaps it has been made into an audiobook. Sadly this book appears to be very obscure. Apparently I was lucky to have stumbled across it one day browsing B&N.
A book with such well developed characters and believable character growth set in a well established universe should have received higher praise. The book is not without faults but it is one of the books I return to every couple of years (hence the 5 stars) when I want a moving story about real relationships which avoids the frankly too common sexual-attraction/worship-trend.
This book is not alone in telling such a plutonic relationship story, but it includes so much more. With the history and sociopolitical plots tied into the unique and compelling aliens this is a Sci-Fi book which should be read by anyone who likes their meat with potatoes. Just don't go in expecting tie-fighters and non-stop action. This is an adventure, the journey is not easy, but it isn't littered with corpses and explosions either.
Sadly I feel that including some homosexual characters in her novel left some readers at least partially alienated. I will freely confess to preferring hetero relationships in my novels, but like most things in this book it is handled well and is not "preachy." There are no glaring neon signs in this book telling you how to live save "Live and Let Live."
I found this book in a $1.00 bin at a discount store and was drawn in by the cover image. I was totally wrapped up in this story after the first few pages. I heave a heavy great sigh every time I read wonderful, basically unknown, books such as this, and damn the social media hype-machine that makes so many substandard books popular. I have been trawling the discount bins for the last two years trying to find more copies of this book to giveaway on my book blog, but have come up empty handed. I cannot afford the $8 for paperback giveaways, and it is not an ebook. It is so frustrating. People will rarely read a review of an under-the-radar book unless there is a giveaway contest involved. Maybe in the future I'll be rich enough to buy a few copies at the regular price for some giveaways. My advice is to read this book, even if you have to buy it at the regular price. It is a heartwarming Science Fiction jewel.
Been searching high and low for this book! Will be getting more from this author in the future!
