Three words that best describe this book for me would be: misleading, incoherent, and inconsistent.

Misleading, because I expected the story to focus on the three ships in order to evade human extinction after an alien attack. Incoherent in the many perspectives that are being employed to tell the story. Inconsistent, mostly in the way the different species and their interactions are presented.

After a big opener, the story pretty much just idles along for the best part of the following 600+ pages. The fact that humanity almost got wiped out is quickly passed over and not much more than an unimportant story hook. What a waste of potential! Instead we get hyperspace travel and more alien races per page count than anyone could possibly enjoy. And everything is just fine the way it is.

The focus is on the political power struggles between different intergalactic factions, but I found most of it too constructed. On the other hand, most of the characters are lacking in detail and motivation which makes it hard to not feel indifferent about the whole story. Another character is thrown into a sequence of unrelated personal mishaps and adventures, which appears to just fill in towards a certain required page count.

As if by magic, there are no communication problems between all the alien races in the book. With that presumption, using fake colloquial speech is just an annoyance and disturbing the flow of reading. Almost needless to say that alien names come with plenty of apostrophes, and there is even one with an asterisk.

Despite all of the above, I don't think "Seeds of Earth" is necessarily a bad book and after some initial hurdles the pages fly by pretty easily. If not for the (great) cover, this is more fantasy than science fiction. It ends with a nice cliffhanger, though, and I'm curious how the story will continue.

I read the entire series, so this comment covers all three books. Using goobledy-gook names and a multitude of story lines does not necessitate good sci-fi. The entire series could easily have been done in one book, which would have forced the author to eliminate the droning on and on about the forest and hyperspace tiers. Add to this the many unexplained discontinuities, (i.e. a ship that travels light years in hours needs hours to travel a few thousand kilometers), and one's interest begins to break down.

The overall storyline hooked me on purchasing the series, but ... you win some and you lose some.
I would count readers of speculative/science fiction as a cut above the normal reading audience...both in intelligence and imagination. Yet you have reviews here that say the book is essentially "too hard to read." HUH?? Should the author have dumbed it down for you to enable your read to be essentially thoughtless? What is the problem with USING your grey matter? Should everything have to be spelled out? I for one thought it was a tremendous first effort....and I shall be purchasing the rest of the series! Ditch the naysayers Mike, and keep it coming.
The initial set up and build up was painfully slow. So many people and plots were introduced that we never had time to fully invest or care about any specific one. A bit more focus would have helped me. Book 1 of a series needs to have a plot of its own. It can't just set up future novels in the series.
When I first saw the cover and the synopsis for this book I thought, Awesome!, this will be the story about how humanity survived the destruction of Earth! This is not so, I dont want to start pointing out parts of the story and calling out Spoiler Alert, but I will say that this book has an odd writing style. The way the chapters are organized is from the viewpoint of a different character in the story. Thankfully the story stays focused on mainly about 4 or 5 characters give or take a few. But when I first figured out that's what it was I was confused then I understood. It left me hanging on the edge sometimes waiting for a certain perspective to come back and continue where it left off. Also, the style differs a small bit in editing by replacing all the " symbols with simply ' for talking and what people say. I have to say that the most annoying part of this book however is the fact that there are so many alien races in the universe and parts of their technology and culture that are named in this book however, there isn't really enough information to try to gain a visual of it while reading. So to me at least whenever there was a mention of a certain alien creature or machine, it simply just doesn't register as something I can visualize it's just an empty word.

Overall for story plot and characters, I think this book does a good job however. The characters can be interesting to watch and to follow as they make their journey to try and save their world. I recommend this book for its story and for a good adventure story.
I like the fact that it wasn't just a "Us good! You bad! We fight!" trilogy but I quickly lost track of which segment of which alien society was allied with that faction of which other aliens and whether or not they were hostile to one or more of the earther societies never mind who they REALLY were under their disguise and/or who they were in the last great war. Maybe you won't have this problem, they don't really matter to the core story, but you won't know that until it's over. The only way I could closely follow this book is by creating some kind of Rolodex and referring to it every time a seen changed. As it was I just assumed everyone I didn't recognize was named "Smith" and picked up on how they fit in by the current chapter. It didn't seem to hurt the flow of the story any and saved me a lot of time.

And honestly, if all the aliens are going to speak perfect English do we NEED appearing and disappearing Scottish and Russian accents appearing in the text?
