When man becomes machine, cyborgs are the good guys. And Humans will betray them.
Admiral Beijing York volunteers his army of Synthetically-Enhanced soldiers on a mission to settle a new planet. With the promise of freedom and equality, Bei and his cyborgs encounter death and hardship on a one-way trip to nowhere. Bei has two choices die slowly in space, or return to Earth and make the Humans who betrayed them pay.
When Nell Stafford passed out it was 2012. When she wakes up naked aboard a starship it's 2138, and she's surrounded by Syn-En carrying a grudge against Humans like her. But Nell gained something in her 120-year sleep; somehow, she knows everything the Syn-En need to survive. Now she must convince Bei and his people to trust her--as soon as she learns to trust the mysterious intelligence.

As a romance reader, I don't generally read Science Fiction unless it has romantic elements as indicated by this book's tags. This story had plenty of tech speak, diagnostics, computer interfacings with avatars, and battles, but I was quickly engaged by the story and became fully vested with the characters. This book is hard to categorize because it may have too much science to be liked by romance fans and too much romance to be appreciated by Science Fiction fans.Heroine - Nell Stafford awakens in 2138 to find herself under attack in the cargo hold of a space ship. With her last memories of a 2012 Earth devastated by famine, war, ecological and environmental disasters of biblical proportion, Nell enters into this new adventure willing to help bolstered by a quirky sense of humor peppered with 21st century pop culture. Believing she's been sent into the future to help the Syn-En, Nell questions where her "intuitive" knowledge is coming from, but she figures she's been prepped for the mission. So what if the voice sounds an awful lot like her Mother - it wouldn't be the first time Mom's advice didn't come back to haunt her.
Hero - Beijing York, a Syn-En Fleet Admiral has no trust for humans. Humans created his race for battle, exploration, and all around dirty work using people consigned or sentenced through various means such as poverty, being an orphan, or even bankruptcy to a lifetime of servitude requiring bio-tech upgrades. These upgrades result in the dehumanizing loss of not only body parts, but the loss of all rights and freedoms. While appearing more machine than man, Bei is a man of many emotions that remain hidden from all. A man of honor, duty, and integrity Bei has one mission in life: return freedom to his people.
Plot - When a Worm Hole opens up revealing Terra Dos, a new planet that can be colonized by the people of a dying Earth, missions are assigned to the Syn-En to take civilians to the newly discovered planet. When the Worm Hole dead ends, Bei realizes they have been set up and the previous unease and fear of the Syn-En back on Earth has become full blown genocide.
Together Bei and Nell race to figure out a way to punch through the Worm Hole in time to save an inbound starship carrying the last remnants of the Syn-En who escaped the genocide while unbeknownst to either a shadowy menace follows their every move. When Nell is abducted and whisked to Terra Dos, Bei must find a way to get through formidable defenses of a planet that appears devoid of human life and regain what is his while preserving his people.
Romance - developed rather quickly between Bei and Nell given that Bei didn't trust her and he feared her rejection. By turns, tender, passionate and possessive Bei and Nell forge a relationship. For her part, Nell felt she was there for Bei and quickly fell in love. But the story lost some of its magic for me when the Cardinal Rule of Romance was broken. Alone with her abductor, Nell is introduced as "Eve" to his "Adam" and will mother a new race. Nell initially fights him but soon finds herself with new memories and under his complete control through the use of an alien technology. While the "technology" absolved Nell of her actions and the plot had all their interactions taking place off page - it still bothered me. With Bei in pursuit, rescue arrives, new information about Terra Dos' previous inhabitants is revealed, and Nell makes a near fatal decision that gives her a new lease on life. Now planet side - a new adventure begins.

The SynEn Solution eBook Linda Andrews Reviews
This was a pretty good read for me. That is... until the abduction and breeder tropes of romance fiction made their appearance. I will admit to being a hard scifi reader and you can take my review with that bias. But, I've not understood the appeal to the romance community for the breeder idea. It didn't seem to add anything to this story and I felt like it was added in order to complete a recipe.
LA has written a SyFy novel about Earth when they decide to send ,cyborg's to a new planet. The Cyborgs are half human and half machine. As they make their trip they lose ship after ship. Then they discover a woman in a stasis tank. Her mission is to assist the Cyborg's return to humanity when possible. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. In the beginning I struggled with the robotic terms, but after a while they began to make sense and I no longer considered the words a deterrent. The Syn-En warriors were intriguing and I enjoyed how each one of the primary Syn-Ens had unique characteristics and personalities. Like Doc, Captain Penig, Chief Engineer Sydney Shang'hai.
Of course the main protagonists Nell Stafford and Admiral Beijing York were awesome. I loved Nell's feisty yet caring personality. And with every scene Admiral Bei showed more and more of the determination and dedication he had to all who were under his protection. Just what heroes are supposed to have.
The ending was a surprise to me, not all suspecting what was to happen. And, blood thirsty as I am, I would have loved to have seen how Lt. Burkina Faso got her comeuppance. She was soooo...well...read the book to find out.
Two thumbs up to author Linda Andrews for writing a great book. Now off to pick up the sequel.
While it might not have been the intent, this story is a great allegory for today in many ways. It has three strata of humanity and one is barely human. The upper class ( the 1%) makes the decisions for everyone else and most of the time with little regards to humanity. The story is set in a future dystopian time where Earth has been damaged in so many ways. A good read and most enjoyable on several levels.
"There had to be a way out of the wormhole. Earth had shown the world pictures of the planet sent back from their probes. Sent the call for volunteers."
Admiral Beijing York (Bei) volunteered the Syn-Ens ( synthetically-enhanced soldiers) for a mission to reach Tera Dos, a newly discovered habitable planet on the other side of a wormhole. The humans of earth promised them freedom and equality in exchange for settling on Tera Dos. On he way there, he's surprised to find a non-enhanced woman, Nell Stafford, aboard his ship. Not only that but she's from the past and claims she's there to save the Syn-En.
I'm afraid I can't say more about the plot without causing a spoiler but there are lots of twists, action adventure, and hot love scenes. The story is fresh and creative. The world building is more than well done - it's amazing. I loved being aboard the spaceship with the Syn-En. Even the secondary characters seemed real to me. I loved the Syn-En Solution and I highly recommend it.
Even though the story progresses at neck-break speed, the characters are nicely drawn and quickly become motivation for wanting to see what happens next.
The sexual content is a bit raw and clinical rather than subtle but is pretty much confined to parts you can jump over without losing the thread of the plot line or even the sense of "connection" it is supposed to be illustrating between Nell and the Admiral. The storyline was plenty strong without it, but I suppose an element some readers demand. I'm just really glad those sections could be easily jettisoned without harming the depth of story and adventure.
