The Invention of Sarah Cummings Avenue of Dreams Volume 3 Olivia Newport 9780800720407 Books
I enjoyed this book and watching Sarah, a maid in a wealthy household, try to reinvent herself and find a way into the class she serves. After the tragic death of her parents, Sarah is raised in an orphanage until she is old enough to go into service for the wealthy Banning family. By a fluke, she meets Lillie Wagner, a new to Chicago socialite, and the two become best friends - at least Lillie and Serena Cuthbert, Sarah's socialite alter ego, become best friends. As often as Sarah can escape her duties at the Banning house, she enters the world of society through Lillie and begins dating Brad Townsend. The director of the orphanage, Simon Tewell, loves Sarah quietly and accepts her as she is, unconditionally. Where Brad is unpredictable, much flash and many secrets, Simon is dependable, trustworthy, all a woman should want. We see Sarah going back to her roots at the orphanage to teach the girls how to sew, still fighting off her ties to the place. The book takes us through her drastic efforts to distance herself from who and what she is and at what great cost it would all come it. Also, if her new identity was going to end up being one that was going to be one she could accept. You have to accept a lot less when what you want is based on lies rather than a firm foundation of truth.Tags : The Invention of Sarah Cummings (Avenue of Dreams) (Volume 3) [Olivia Newport] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Invention of Sarah Cummings Avenue of Dreams Volume 3 Olivia Newport 9780800720407 Books Reviews
Great read! I read 1st book, Lucy Banning and couldn't wait to enjoy Sarah Cummings. I was not disappointed. I am now reading Dilemma of Charlotte Farrow. I was able to download Sarah Cummings which is why I read before Charlotte Farrow.I enjoy period pieces.
When I read the first of Olivia Newport's "Avenue of Dreams" books, I was hooked on the series, and it just gets better and better. I loved the first novel and the second, but SARAH CUMMINGS has to be my favorite. Newport does a great job of placing her main character Sarah into a situation that seems hopeless, and yet... Ah, just wait until you read the ending!
Although I received a reader's copy from the publisher, this honest review is for a copy that I purchased myself.
I didn't like Sarah from the other two books, but I am reconsidering my animosity now. I loved the ending, and Ms. Newport certainly had this old lady on the edge of her seat there towards the end. It is a grand series and I hope she does more like this one.....if you have read the first and second book You have to finish the series and see how things worked out. Do I Iove Sarah or still think she is reprehensible? Well it doesn't matter what I think; read the last book in the series and see for yourself.
I loved this book, and the previous two books in the series as well! But this was my favorite! To tell you the truth, I almost didn't read this book, as the character of Sarah Cummings was so unlikeable in the previous book, that I had little interest in knowing more about her. However, I'm so glad I did, as the author wrote a beautiful story about the development and growth of Sarah, and I was so enthralled, I couldn't put it down. I also loved the setting of this series of books--Chicago, around the time of the 1893 World's Fair....such an exciting, historical time for our country and this city. This author has become one of my favorites, and I plan to read every one of her books!
This novel offers a sneak peek into the lives of Chicagoans in the late 1800's. History was truly brought to life - so much so that I felt angered at the deeply entrenched societal injustices towards women, as well as the deep divisions between the socio-economic classes. The storyline kept my attention, and the characters were brought to life in a way that gave them depth and humanity.
Kudos both to the author, Olivia Newport, and to the researcher, Stephen Reginald, for bringing readers such a dynamic glimpse into Chicago history. Before this novel (and the other 2 in the series) Chicago history was just a string of interesting facts to me. This book (and series) would be well-placed on 7th, 8th grade and high school reading lists for Chicago schools. Besides making history become alive and relevant, this book can stimulate student interest in current day values and politics.
Although it is still written well and kept me glued to my kindle, I liked this one the least of the three books in this series. I didn't like Sarah in the second book and struggled to like her in this book. Apparently she did learn to curb her attitude and get along with everyone enough that she is still at the Banning's three years later where this book starts. However, she's still not content in her station and yearns to have the life of those she serves. She lies to a girl she meets in a shop which leads to a whole secret life that she struggles to maintain along with her duties at the Banning's. When her worlds collide she struggles to change. It's only when tragedy strikes that she is able to become who she is meant to be.
I am once again intrigued by the writings of Olivia Newport. In this particular book I found the historical history so spot on that I could have been a character in the book myself. This story takes a young girl, born into privilege, then thrown into a complete opposite life living in an orphanage and sent into the world of being a lowly servant for a family of privilege. She uses her skills and talents wanting so badly to resume her position of privledge, that she invents and then becomes someone of priviledge, although not honest, an attempt to return to her former life. Through it all she becomes the person that she is in her heart. She travels from servitude to wealthy and in the end she becomes the best of both worlds. A 5 star book indeed. Thank you Ms. Newport for an outstanding book that left me in awe of many of the historical ways of life and how just such lives could reach such heights. Thank you for your research and dedication to present an excellent story that embodies real life in real times. My how our world has changed...for better or for worse. I commend you!!!!
